Adaptation and maladaptation to chronic morphine

Chronic exposure to opioids and other drugs of abuse induces adaptation in the brain that leads to drug craving and relapse after abstinence. We explore the possibility that persistent epigenetic changes, via gene expression alterations, lead to these maladaptive behaviors that are very difficult to reverse.
